B james is a los angeles story. designer brandon james, born and raised in east los angeles, represents the convergence and restless energy of the city he lives and works in. founded in 2015, b james is redefining the landscape for high street, luxury, and haute couture by bringing the street element of his upbringing, the vibrant element of hip-hop in the 90's, and the glamor element of hollywood's red carpet to create a new wave of fashion called street couture. shows and performances are essential to the ethos of the label. the b james stage is created by an ensemble of artists working in experimental music, image making, nightlife, and performance. their work is grounded in radical interrogations of the body liberated from structures of the normal. b james's work subverts traditional divisions between authentic and global, male and female, insider/outsider, art, and commerce. brandon james design and manufacture his full range of suitings, shirts, knits, denim and outerwear entirely in los angeles, incorporating fabric from the best italian, japanese and american mills. it is paramount to the dna of the b james brand that it keeps its production roots in los angeles. b james supports local tailors, pattern makers, and skilled garment workers. what sets brandon's design philosophy apart from his contemporaries is the deliberate self-awareness he pours into his work, in fact, he prefers the term "street couture" over "streetwear" because he feels the latter has connotations of being afraid to take risks, especially with style, while the former symbolizes turning the streets into a runway.
